The Los Angeles Daily Journal profiled the remarkable growth and success of the Los Angeles office in a story published on June 16. In “Paul Weiss shows Los Angeles’ mid-market private equity scene is a foundation for success,” the legal news publication spoke with Eric Wedel, head of the office, about how the firm has tapped in Southern California’s close-knit private equity community to build a high-performing West Coast strategy—and why intentional growth, rather than lawyer numbers, is the key to the office’s long-term success. Los Angeles is “an untapped source of top legal talent,” Eric says, noting the firm’s success over the past 18 months in bringing in some of the country’s leading lawyers and rising stars based in the city.
Product Liability & Mass Torts co-chair Kim Branscome, among the first partners to join the L.A. team last year, notes that Paul, Weiss’s platform was a major draw. “There were a number of my clients that overlapped” with the firm’s existing clients, as well as new clients introduced to her through her new partners. “It’s been fantastic,” she notes.
Eric adds that he realized quickly there was a real opportunity to build a significant presence in the region, which is fertile ground for a focused, middle-market private equity platform. “LA probably has the largest proportion of funds that are starting up, funds that are getting bigger, funds that have a strategy to get bigger,” Eric says.
