Cybersecurity & Data Protection Practice Group Chair John Carlin was quoted in a Cipher Brief article about the importance of robust public-private collaboration to counter sophisticated cyber threats. In “As Cyber Threats Grow, the Clock Ticks on a Critical Cybersecurity Law,” published on September 18, John, speaking at The Cipher Brief’s Cyber Initiatives Group Fall Summit, notes that conflicting factors may prevent companies from sharing critical information with the government.
When a U.S. company is targeted by a nation-state actor, John says, “we must treat [it] as a victim.” However, while a targeted company is “getting help from some government agencies, others are looking to punish the victim,” he observes. “The cost of that in terms of … sharing information is too high given the threat that we face.”
